Trinity Lutheran Church graciously coordinates the Friend, Inc. Food Pantry satellite location at the Lutheran Center. They continue to serve KU students on a weekly basis on Wednesdays. The services include a perishable and nonperishable food distribution from 4-6pm, with a warm snack to eat while waiting for their turn and an invitation to stay for a warm home-cooked meal served at 5pm. No prior arrangements are necessary- if you are in need, just show up!
Since September, they have served over 150 different KU students. Their weekly visits so far this semester range from 35-40 students, with the number increasing by a few students each week. The students who are typically served are those without meal plans- primarily students living in Golden Bear (no meal plan requirement) and commuter students.
These are the current needs. Perhaps you are able to assist?
- Insulated bags. If you have any clean, insulated, reusable food bags, the pantry could use them to give to students. Students often come to the pantry and then are unable to get right to the fridge/freezer. Please bring to MSU 153 and we will get them to the Lutheran Center.
- There are many items that cannot be sourced at the Greater Berks Food Bank that are in demand. Donations of these foods are appreciated. Mac and Cheese, Soup, Cereal, Tuna, Breakfast Bars, Shampoo, Toothpaste, feminine hygiene products. Please bring to MSU 153 and we will get them to the Lutheran Center.
- We are looking for sponsors and hosts to provide hospitality (drinks and warm finger foods for 40 people) each Wednesday that classes are in session. This is a 2 hour time commitment from 3-5pm. 3-3:30pm preparing- oven/stove provided; 3:30-5pm talking with students and serving snacks while they wait for their turn. *the space is small, only 1-2 volunteers at a time would be appropriate www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0F44ABA623A7FD0-snack
- Physical Labor: Due to the limited space for storage, the space gets stocked weekly from pickups at Friend, Inc. and Greater Berks Food Bank. Loading and unloading the trucks, and stocking the shelves is frequently needed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you would like to be included on a list of students, faculty and staff that we reach out to when help is needed, please let me know. The times for this are inconsistent and dependent on factors beyond our control, so notice will typically be 1-2 days in advance and occasionally same-day.
